I went back home for winter break. I wrote this the day after I saw what happened to the beaches.
Stay strong Jersey.
The Jersey Shore
And lost souls in the sand.
The sound of construction keens louder
As they shift and move the land.
The seagulls ride high on the air.
So few, you can count them all.
None sit out on the rocky pier.
The lab’ring humans hide their call.
No sandpipers skitter by the tide.
The line broken only by the sandcrab’s breath.
There are ghosts on the beach, souls in the sand;
In the dunes hangs only the umber of death
–where the boardwalk once stood.
